You should see a MIDI controller just to the left. It should look like a progress bar or a movie. When you press the play button, you should also hear two notes.

If you don't see the controller, then check your browser helper applications. Reinstalling QuickTime(for Windows) usually puts the helpder application in the right place for you.
If you don't hear anything but see the controller, then check your sound card volume settings.

To your right, you should see an interactive "Flash" element, which gives you two buttons to push that shows you some notation and plays some musical notes. If you do not see it, you may need to update the "Flash" plug-in used in your browser.
You can get the Flash plug-in free online (type Flash in Google, it should be at the top of the list)

Moodle Users: Follow this link to the Practice Room. Try a couple of the applets in the Practice Room to see if you have Java correctly installed. Be sure to try an applet in the audio column because applets that load audio files may have trouble loading on slower internet connections.

Try one of the listening tests at the bottom of the Practice Room to see if your connection if fast enough to load the audio files. Try several questions to see if it fails after several questions. You can close the window at any time to quit.

This course makes use of Java applets for the musical testing. Therefore you must have a Java compliant browser. Notice at the top of the page you can try an older version of the Practice Room that uses Java 1 instead of Java 2. If you are in a class on the ETUDES server you may be using Java 1 so try this link to the older Java applets. If these applets don't work you may need to load the Java plug-in for your browser. You can get it at Java.com.
Somewhere on that page is a button to download the free plugin.

If you are using a modem to access the Internet, you will have to be patient while things download. The applets on a 56K modem can take more than 30 seconds to load; if the applets use sound, each question may take a few seconds for the sound to load. If your modem is even slower (not recommended for this course) then you may have to wait twice as long or longer. If you have a direct connection to the Internet via cable modem or DSL, things move pretty fast with only minor waits. The applets over a cable modem take about 10 seconds to load.

You don't need any special plug-ins for this class but here are some known issues that might help:

Macintosh

OS9

1) OS9 is no longer fully supported because it does not support the new Java2 applets. This course is migrating to the new Java so expect that the applets on OS9 may not work soon.

OSX

1) Because Internet Explorer 4 (IE4) is no longer supported for the Mac you should use Firefox with Java and the html text fields in Moodle.
2) Java ships with OSX so you do not need to install anything for the applets to work.
3) The MIDI files should also work fine and be played by QuickTime.

Windows

1) Firefox is recommend but IE should also work for most all of the media in these classes.
3) You will need to install the Java plugin for the applets to load. You will see only a grey box if it is not installed. After you install it you will need to restart your browser for it to work. (It's best to completely reboot).
2) Set your MIDI plug-in in the helper files for your browser until you see a controller that lets you start, stop and change volume for each MIDI file. Usually installing QuickTime for Windows will get your MIDI files to work.

If you have trouble read the Serial Number Information. It will give you some hints and also a contact for getting help if necessary. Unfortunately, your instructor cannot offer in-person assistance with your computer configuration. If you are unable to get these features to work properly, you may have to postpone this class until next semester. If you cannot get this to work and wish to drop, please let your instructor know as quickly as possible so that your place can be filled by a student on the waiting list.
